I was gone to church and then to my daughters house all afternoon. By the time I got home and did chores I was ready for bed. So today you get two days.....

January 30
I got up this morning at 6:45. Jemrose made me couple of pieces of toast and a cup of tea. Got all my goat books ready and also my ice water and some bread slices. I worked on a projection for the Sanctuary for 10 years. I figured Jodi would start with 10 does and by the end of 6 years she would have about 70 does and producing a substantial amount of milk for cheese. I think I revised this chart about 5 times, each time adding another calculation on the milk production. I also gave Gashumba, ( co-op organizer), a copy of my rough draft so that his organization could see what was a possibility for the Dairy.
Jodi was here at 8am we drove to pick up Gashumba so he could help us translate the idea with the women's co-op. We also picked up Zilvana (the Russian horticulturist). She is going to work with the guys at the sanctuary and the veg. and banana plants today. We left her at the Sanctuary and left for our meeting with the women.
We have a meeting with the Women's Co-op today. We met at the Women's location rather than the sanctuary. There was a big garden area next to us that isn't in the pictures. I think the ladies understood what the proposal was, but they still didn't like the idea. So we explained another alternative. In the end I think they all understood what we were trying to propose and they will let us know after they talk to their families about this idea.
This is how we met several times with the women. Jodi is in the background too.

We went back to the Sanctuary and picked up Zilvana and went back to town. We dropped the two passengers off at their stops. Then headed to Jemroses house so I could change clothes and go out to Pizza with Jodi. She is the Quiz Queen at this restaurant on Monday Night. Its a fun evening to answer questions and see how much you know. If you get the most questions right your whole table gets a free dinner and second place gets the whole tables drinks free. This restaurant uses Jodi's tomato sauce on their pizza's. We had a fun evening and I was home by 10:30pm. I was ready for bed.
She brought some of her workers to do this task. Jodi left the tomatoes here at Jemroses house and took the workers to go with her to the freezer where she had some more sauce. So Jemrose and I got into working on the tomatoes, cleaning and cutting. Jemrose had to take her daughter back to the dentist and had to leave, so I just kept working. Jodi got back and her workers took over the job. I went out to the front porch and started revising my spreadsheet. When the sauce was done, Jodi took it and her workers to deliver it to the restaurant. I thin had some lunch and the girls showed me how to wash my clothes.

Now the truth is this was all staged... cause they said I didn't do it right. The girls washed my clothes and I sort of washed cause they said I didn't get everything clean enough. I was so surprised that the whites were white and the socks were spotless. Its crazy how clean everything was. Thanks girls. I never washed again the whole time I was here. The girls were great. They even wash their shoes and sandals about every 4 days. My tennis shoes were so white.
When we got done washing clothes we hung them on the clothes line.
When the laundry was done we were just hanging around visiting when we heard a swam of bee's. They came into the back yard area by the clothes line. It was huge. We all ran into the house, shut windows and doors quickly so the bee's wouldn't come into the house. We watched the swarm through the window's. Its illegal to kill honey bees in Rwanda. As we watched the bee's left between those two buildings in the back there. Then we went back outside. I got onto the Internet this afternoon. Checked my emails, put alittle bit on facebook.
We ate dinner: cauliflower, broccoli, boiled pumpkin, fryed banana and potatoes and beans. It was very good and filling.
Then we had prayer and to bed by 9:05pm. I have to be up by 5:30 because tomorrow is "Hero's Day" and Faustin is taking me to the Stadium where it will take place.

I want to throw a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my eldest daughter, Jami.

The Farm Report

Yesterday we didn't have any new babies born. We let the boar mom's and kids out of their pens. They were so cute running around in the field. Ali and I went to church yesterday in Longview, about 45 miles. Then we went up to Heathers, my #2 daughters for chili lunch and Ali and Jamie worked on her college applications for financial aid. Jonathan came over and helped with chores in the morning and then went with us. He also helped us with evening chores. We reheated up left over spaghetti for dinner.
Today we had a photographer here to take pictures of me and the cheese for the article they are putting together about the Rotary Club Benefit. The Chronical. I packaged all my restaurant cheeses and cut up a round of Grande Rosa for the photo's.
Have a GREAT Day.. Its sunny, windy but no rain!!!)
January 29
Well last night wasn't so good for Elina, she had a root canal done and it is infected. Last night she was hurting so bad that Jemrose at 2:00am had to catch a motor scooter into Kigali to go to a 24 hour pharmacy and get her some antibiotics. I must of been pretty tired cause I heard none of this movement.
Dieudonne, Innocent, Elina, Jane (Jeanne), Claudine, Marie Claire, John Paul; Jean Paul (JP), Eric, John Peter, Faustin, Sunday (Jean Claude). I only have 5 of them in pictures.

I got up at 6:45am and made some toast and tea and sat out on the front porch and listened to the birds.
When Jemrose got up and told me what had happened I knew this would be a long day. We caught a motorbike to the bus station to catch the bus towards Bugesera, where the church was located. Also one of Jemroses sons goes to school across the road from the church, John Paul. We got to the bus area and climbed on a bus always watching our watches. The bus didn't move and no one else came to get on so we decided to catch another motorbike to the church. We were a bit late but caught the last of the worship....I felt at home, safe and warm. It was so great. I could of danced in the isles. The message was wonderful too. I just relaxed and prayed for strength for Jemrose after last night.
After church we walked up to the school to see John Paul. We found him preaching at the school. That was also very cool. The students were so sweet. You could feel Jesus everywhere. John Paul is in his senior year there then he will go to the university if his test scores are high enough.
After this we walked to the bus stop to catch a mini bus. We went back to the bus area close to the house and took a bicycle ride down to the house. These guys don't have helmets but do all the same driving tactics as the motorbikes. So I was in my jumper and had to sit sidesaddle. It was actually fun. You go slower and they swerve a bit more to miss the holes and bumps.
When we got home Jemrose made us lovely sandwiches with croissant, Avocado, tomato cucumber and pepper and a cabbage salad and Mayo. YUM! I have to tell you I am allergic to citric acid... when I eat tomatoes here or for that matter anything so called fresh I break out with sores in my mouth, canker soars. Over there I never got one and I ate the stuff all the time.
Jodi came and picked me up so we could go out to the handicap orphanage and deliver some of the goodies I took over there. We had Emmanual with us and his helper. Emmanual is going to the university and Jodi found him a sponsor through her organization. We drove out of town for quite awhile. The only wild life I actually saw were two monkeys and by the time I found my camera they were gone.
There are 11 children living here. One was in the hospital. We gave them enough color books, crayons, stuffed animals, wooden cars and a couple soccor balls for all 11 children.

On our way home from the orphanage we got a flat tire. At first there were only a few people watching but by the end we had a crowd. The gentleman in the pink shirt finally changed the tire and got us on our way. I slipped him some franks---cant tell you how much, but it was a big number on the paper money for helping us. I was so grateful for his help and calmness.

Farm News:

Today the weather is rain. I went out at 7am and cleaned the milk parlor while the girls fed our 4 babies - 2 lambs (freezer meat) 1 new sannen buck, and supplementing a boar doe kid. Then I headed off to the processing plant to put my feta into buckets and into the cooler for 5 days. The chevre I hung is looking good. And this afternoon I will turn the Grande Rosa over. House bound today... Our car is getting a new engine, our bulk tank is holding the temperature _ after spending a large amount of money and having to have the guy come out about 5 times.

Danyel has an interview on Tue for a job at the Feed Store in Longview, keeping my fingers crossed. Ali is going to be working on her drivers license - cause if Danyel gets the job Ali will be doing markets until she leaves for college in Sept..

David is at the first Proctors Farmer's Market this year. We haven't got our health permit so we cant sample our cheese.... the usual no money thing. We will get it this week so in two weeks we will be back sampling. David is bearing the elements - rain, wind, cold to sell our cheese. He will stop on his way home this afternoon to drop off a cheese order to a restaurant in Olympia.

No more babies born last night. So we will be watching those Nigerians very close... we are putting the baby monitor up there in the barn so we can hear them.

Have a great day and stay dry and look on the bright side:)

This morning I got up at 8am, maybe I have adjusted. I had a couple cups of tea some toast and some watermelon. Jemrose bought it the other day at the market. Rwanda is starting to grow them, but they are very expensive.
Today is a National Work Day. Its the last Sat. of every month. From 8am - Noon each community does a project. No one travels. If your out the police will stop you and ask why your not helping your community. If you must go somewhere you must be back before 8am.
It is usually warm here, and there has been a smog hanging over the town until about noon. I didn't take many pictures yesterday.
Jemroses other son is here visiting, John Paul. He is a senior in high school. He is studying to be a doctor and he is also like a pastor on campus. You must study very hard because you have to past a test in order to get into the next level of school.
School in Rwanda isn't like ours. Jemroses children go away like to boarding school. They get holidays off and come home then. Jemroses children seem to get sick stomachs when they are away from home. Its because the food and water they have to drink at the schools. You have to pay for these schools. You can go to primary grades for free. But the middle and high school costs your family money.
Jemroses foundation helps pay for the schooling and all the school supplies that these kids need. She helps them stay on task and is their support.
The girls braided my hair so I would look nice for Church tomorrow. This took all morning to do. But if I say so my self I think it turned out great.
At 2pm Jemrose, Faustin and I left for the town. First we walked about 3 blocks mostly up hill to the market and we walked on the outside of the market. There were lots of fruits and veg. as well as fish and chicken. It was very busy and congested. It really looked like a big farmers market. We caught a bus that would take us to town. Now let me explain about the bus routes. There is no posted schedule and there are no arriving times or leaving times. Its when the bus is full.

The bus on the left is one of the mini vans. The people on the right are waiting for buses.

Now this first one was a mini van, there are three bench seats and then where the walk way is another seat flips out. They sit 5 across each seat and the seat next to the driver will hold two people. There is a guy who calls out to the people waiting for a bus telling them where his bus is going. Every time we stop half the bus gets off to let someone else out... it was crazy. One note, I was the only white person on the bus - every time I took a bus. You pay for your ride just before you get off. I don't know how that guy keeps track of everyone but he never missed a beat to collect that money. This first bus took us to another stop where Faustin got off and took another bus to go see his mom in another part of Kigali. We took another bus that took us to the heart of Kigali. Where we got out and walked through town. We needed to find and exchange place so I could get some franks for my American money. The exchange that day was 6.1 to our dollar. so I exchanged $100. Sure got alot of money back.
So we caught a scooter or motorcycle with helmet back to the house. The boys driving the motorbikes went slow cause I was new to all this. This whole trip was about 5 hours long today. Our baby Nigerian Dwarf passed away this morning. It was so sad. This was Willow's first baby. We will continue to milk Willow and start adding her milk to the bulk tank for now. Eventually after all the mom's have their babies we will save the milk to only add to my chevre recipe. Yum!

Today I was a busy lady... as usual. I got up at 5:30am with David. He left for Seattle to sell at Pikes Place and check on our restaurants to see if we had any orders for this next week. We are getting ready for the Farmers Markets to start opening. Proctor in Tacoma starts this Sat. Olympia starts next week. So today I washed my cheese cloth so I could hang the chevre that I made yesterday. I checked on my feta it will go in the cooler tomorrow for 5 days. Then I made 36 gallons of milk into 5 rounds of Grande Rosa and got it pressing. I also packaged about 70 packages of Chevre for the markets this weekend. Then to the milk parlor to clean the bulk tank and hose as well as the milking system for this evening milking. I set it all up for the girls. Now I am making potato soup for dinner. I will hit the bed early tonight.

When I got up this morning, Jemrose and one of her daughters was heading off to the market. The market is like our farmers markets. Open stalls and there is lots of veg. and fish and chickens. It is very noisy. The vendors are trying to get your attention and show you their food. What I have heard if your a white person there is a higher price they charge you and if your Rwandes its a lower price. They think all white people have money.... wonder where they got that idea?
Jodi picked me up at 8:30am which this time she was on time. She had errands to do. The first thing we did was move some of her stuff from a storage shed to where she is stying at the moment. It is very hot today... don't know the temp. but its much warmer that the days before. I have my frozen water bottle and a few slices of bread in a baggy to snack on today. I also keep putting my sunblock on. After moving her stuff... which was an adventure cause one of our tires went flat and we had to have it pumped up.
Then onto the Sanctuary. But first we pick up Zivlana,( I am sure I didn't spell her name right) she is a Russian lady who works with plants and agriculture and her specialty is banana's. On our way to pick her up Jodi took me over some of her shortcuts..... I was holding on for dear life.

So Jodi wants her to check on her bananas and check out the rest of the agriculture at the Sanctuary. When we got there Jodi and Zivlana went to check the agriculture out and instruct the worker guys to start implementing her suggestions. I went and checked on the chickens and looked at the goats. Then I found a wicker chair to sit in the shade with and read my goat books. Its very quiet here and peaceful. I do notice at my feet a large amount of ants, so I had to move my chair a few times.

Later that afternoon we had a meeting with the women's-co-op. I was to explain how much work it takes to do a goat dairy. Our main idea was to weed out the ones who were not going to take this task seriously. So that I could train the core group about dairy goats and milking. And again the biggest issue was they didn't want to buy goats for themselves, they wanted Jodi to do that. And Jodi said no way. Emiy, Jodi's right hand helper, translated for us and then translated for the women.

Here is alittle bigger shot of the women from the co-op

We will meet again in a few days to see who comes back for the real deal.

We left the farm about 5:30pm. The conversation on the way home was how do we get the women to see that this is a good idea. We came up with the co-op buys the goats and that way each women would only have a very small investment. The co-op would then own the goats so it would make the money from selling the milk to Jodi. This way the co-op could pay each lady back her investment in order to make another investment. So to make their money back quicker we thought Jodi could buy the baby does back from them since their goats would of been bred by the Sanitaries Sannen buck. Jodi would agree to pay the price they paid for the adult goat for the baby goat... thus they would make their investment back in 7 months. And if they had a buck kid they could sell that at the market and again make their investment. So on Monday we will present this idea and see what happens.
Today Jodi payed her employees their salary. Then we dropped Silvana off at a bus stop. And the went to Jodi's house so she could change clothes so we could go to a birthday party and a Rotary Club Meeting. (I was upset that we didn't have time to go let me change into clean clothes for this party). I had on my holey jeans, a t-shirt. I went and tried to stay away from people cause I smelled like sweat and goat. I went and got a glass of wine and sat in a corner. Jemrose came with Bobby , a friend. And they came and sat with me and visited. Later Jodi came over and sat too. It was a nice party. They had BBQ some goat and then made a bunch of traditional food. I met some business men and women at the meeting. It was a nice house and nice people. I got home about 11:45 and was very glad to hit the bed.
FARM NEWS: March 29
Our first Nigerian Dwaf baby was born. Mom's name is Willow and we think the babies name will be Alder. Willow had the baby last night and we found her this morning all cleaned up - but she was weak so we brought her in the house and milked Willow so we could get some colostrum down the baby. I looked at my tube for tubing my reg. sized kids and thought it might be to big. So today I will run to the vets and get a smaller tube that will fit these guys. I like to give them a tubing if they are alittle weak so they get a good start. We are feeding it a little colostrum from a bottle. I am making Chevre today and packaging up cheese for the weekend markets. Our car broke this week and we are having to have a new engine put in it. It should be ready by Friday this week if all goes according to plan. The goats are milking great and things are sort of running smooth.
Got up today at 6:45am. Jodi picked me up at 8:30am and we met Gashumba, he helps the women's co-op get organized and teaches them how to run the co-op. What this entails are alot of talking and explaining sessions with these women. They are smart believe me, they just have to be reminded over and over how it all works. One of the things the women thought and kept bringing up at our meetings was that Jodi would give them goats. They are so use to organizations giving them things they assumed that this was the case with the Sanctuary. This was repeated over at each meeting we had that this was not the case. I think in the end it became clear to them.
After the very long meeting we came back home to Jemroses house and had lunch and then Jodi left to do more veterinary work and some of her errands. I have another headache, don't know if its from the heat or elevation here. I took some aspirin and went and laid down. When I got up I went on the computer in Jemroses office and wrote to David and got to talk to all my children in the States. So many questions and so many people on at one time it was crazy.
Jodi came back for dinner and then went back to the house she is staying at. Jemrose had company this evening. A husband and wife and three cute kids. I gave them each a color book and crayons to entertain themselves while we visited. They didn't speak English or not well, but Jemrose understood what they were saying. These people are so sweet and kind. I love the Rwandes people. Today was kind of a relax day for me as I was home most of the day. So I didn't take pictures
We said our prayers and went to bed by 9:15pm. Before I got to go to bed the oldest son had to catch a gecko that scampered into my room.
This morning I was up at 6:30am and got to see the sunrise while eating my toast and fresh pinapple and cup of tea.
Jodi came at about 10am to pick me up. She had Carlesa with her, she is the wife of the Dutch Embassy. She is a really sweet lady. And I must assume she loves adventure.
I must tell you about the roads here. They are like going up into the mountains 4wheel driving. They have thier paved roads and there are a lot of very nice dirt roads, but I starting noticing that Jodi loves taking the short cuts - which are roads with huge holes, sometimes ruts as deep as the tires are. And sometimes the car is almost on its side... but she assures me, she knows how to drive them. And I have to say she did too.
She took Carlesa and myself on one of those such roads this morning, I think to see if we were awake and had our energy juices running. We actually went and picked up a puppy that had been caught running around and Jodi was going to take it to the Sanctuary. The pastor that was holding it for Jodi was very nice and he was also helping the farming with the Rwandis people and he already had 3 dogs and didn't need another one.
We went out to the Sanctuary with the puppy. It was along day looking over everything. When we got there Emey took the puppy and put it into a quanteened pen.

The building in the background is the Office building thour right now it is housing chicks and chickens. Being outside all day I got my first sunburn, though not bad it reminded me to put my sunblock on.

So we took a tour of the Animal Sanctuary. This is her rabbit and guinie pig pens. Eventually she wants the rabbits to be in the pen that surrounds the little pens, running free. They have snake wire around this pen to protect the rabbits from snakes. I must mention - I didn't see any snakes while there. Thank you Lord.

Ater this tour we decided to head home. Carlisa didn't want to leave the puppy, so we took it back to Kigali and she is going to adopt it. But before we get very far we stop at a little bar type place and have a soda and get a bottle of water to go. This place had pool tables and tables and chairs and a counter area to order your drinks. It sounds like a bar now that I think about it. We sat outside at a table in the shade and took the puppy with us. Carlisa bought the drinks and it was a very quenching drink. Thanks Carlisa!

When we got back to Jemroses house I took a nap and Jodi took Carlisa home.

We had beans and carrots and potatoes with peanut sauce and rice. Dinner was cooked by the three girls. It was very tasty. I took a shower today, in cold water. Dont cringe yet.... thier water isn't anything like the NorthWests water temperature. The water was cool but it sure felt good. Everyday I did sponge baths and made sure to wash my feet, face, neck and arms. When I would wash my hair there was so much red dirt in it the whole shower area turned brown.

Today I saw my first geco, climbing on the wall. I saw many geco's during my visit. They never were on the ground and they eat mosqitoes. Jemrose said when they moved to this house there were no geco's. So they prayed for them to come....and they came.

This is a baby one.
I also saw a hug cockroach on the wall outside. I didn't take a picture but it was almost the size of my hand. Ick!
One side note is that just before sunset we shut all the windows and pull all the curtains. No mosqitoes get in this way. I also never did use the bug net... there were no bugs yet!
Bed was sweet tonight.
I got up at 6:45am. The time difference is I think about 10 hours so its really evening in Winlock. I left my cell phone on and charged so I would know what time it was at home. I also had my alarm set to milking times at home so I would be reminded what my family was doing back in the States.
I ate breakfast of two pieces of toast and butter, with a small banana and two cups of tea.
So before I start telling you about my day, I want to tell you about where I was staying.
Jemrose had moved into this house in November, so had only lived here a few months when I showed up. Deodonie- the oldest of her children, cleaned his room out so I could have his room and bathroom. I am sure I havent spelled his name correct. That was very nice and I was very comfortable. this is a traditional bed for Rwandes.
I need to share about the house that there were locks on all the doors, with keys - to be used. I am not talking about outside doors, I mean every door in the house. For instance the kitchen had three doorways and each had a door and a key. And all the doors were locked every night and anytime we all left. And bars on all the windows. There are no screens on the windows. I believe this was due to the attacks that have happened in the past years of Rwanda. This house is payed for by the organization that Jemrose is part of. ROY PROJECT, its out of England. I will put the information on later for her project. Jemrose is from England and has the accent to prove it. She speaks pretty good Rwandes and knows the customs too. Jemrose has 9 foster children from the ages of 17- 27 years old. She sees them as her own children. She teaches them their traditions and cultural ways of doing things as well as helps them stay in school and get into a school. I look forward to going back to Rwanda to see her and possibly to help her anyway I can. I too have a heart for the children that are displaced, as we were foster parents here in the states for almost 8 years.
Back to the house: This is the front room and dinning area. When you enter the house you have a different pair of shoes, so as to not bring in the clay dirt. They dust and wash everything down almost every day. Even the outside of the house, the windows and bars, and the sidewalks and all the floors. The couch and chairs were bought by the ROY PROJECT. Before the couch it was plastic chairs. The hutch in the back held our dishes that we ate on.

The stove in the corner is propane. We didn't use the oven, but did use to burners to keep things warm. We rarely used this sink as the one outside was the dish washing station usually. There was a refrigerator not wider than the stove and about 2 times taller. It had a little freezer. You can see the bars on the window too.

The dish washing sink is on the left bottom. There is only grass in the front yard. The rest is cement. The building you see is the storage and cooking room. The blue bucket is a hand washing station. And they have a food storage room that isn't in the picture but it is past the sinks and table on the left. They stored potatoes, fresh veg. and rice and beans and then more cooking dishes in there and it locked. The silver table is a charcoal stove. There are three burners to it and where the black holes are is where the ash goes.

This way of cooking is traditional for Rwandes. And the children cooked for me on it each night. Oh the food was wonderful. I even got to cook on it one night when I made them as close to Taco's as I could get.
This is the front porch. I ate breakfast here every morning. It was so peaceful and relaxing. I remember thinking I am really in Africa. The sun shone each day and averaged about 80 degrees. The red fence in the top picture is a secured gate. We had to lock it when we went out and came in. It had a gate so we could just open it and not the big doors, which are for cars to enter. There is a wall all the way around the house and yard and is very secure. The birds would sing to me. I tried to get a picture of them but they are very small and my camera was not very good focusing in on them... before they moved. We also had a bearded dragon (lizard)
in the far corner our the yard. Jemrose got a picture of him. I could never get one.
Now onto my day:
Also time really isn't a factor here, anyway Jodi would tell me a time she would be by to pick me up but it was always an hour or two later. So watching the clock did no good. Jodi has a jeep in Rwanda. Jemrose doesn't have transportation. O.K. back on track. She picked me up and we went to another persons house in Kigali, to make tomato sauce. Jodi's foundation sells the sauce to a pizza restaurant. Last year she grew all the tomatoes on the Sanctuary property. This year the blight took out the tomatoes, so she is having to buy the tomatoes at the open market.
These are some guys that work for Jodi, they are washing the tomatoes and cutting them in half and then they will use a industrial wizzer ( giant mixer) to smash the tomatoes. Then we took the tomato sauce to the restaurant.
After this Jodi had two meetings with her employees to catch up on the last months while she was gone to the States. After this we went to pick up a stray dog and take it to the sanctuary and then Jodi will find it a home. Then Jodi brought me back to Jemroses house and I got to visit with the children there. I had for lunch: a special bread - its like indian bread- it was so good and some fruit and cold water.-
Electricity is very expensive there, so the lights are not used often and then made sure they are turned off promptly. So the Internet is the same. The kids had the Internet on, so I brought up facebook and showed them pictures of my family and all the snow we had just had. I got to show them all my goats too. While I was on facebook, I left notes for my daughters to tell their dad all is well and to tell him Hi. I was on the Internet the whole three weeks about 6 or 7 times. After this I went in and took a nap.
Jemrose and I got some alone time and I shared how David and I met and how God moved in our lives. We shared our relationship with God. We both were in agreement too.
Jemrose shared with me about the Genocide that took place over 15 years ago, 1994. Each year on, I believe April 7, the whole country morns the loss for 100 days. Jemrose shared how her children react to this event. It was very sad. Some of her children lost their whole families and were chopped with machete's themselves. It is all very disheartening. I really have issues with government now - cause they knew about what was happening and turned a blind eye. Some countries even sent over the machete's to help with the massacre. How rude!!!!
Before I came over to Africa I had to put together a picture book for my goat class. But I didn't put any writing under the pictures so that we could have someone put Rwandes words to describe what it was they were looking at. I gave my book to Jodies right hand man, Emey, who also did all the interpretations for me.
I have gotten alittle color on my cheeks from the sunshine here, already. I have lost track of time. My watch is set at Blue Rose Dairy time and then the clock in the frontroom here is Rwandes time.
Driving here is crazy. The scooters and motorcylcs go where ever they want and the cars do about the same. I shut my eyes when we come to the intersections. Cars and trucks and scooters all mesh together.
We had chips (french fries) for dinner, beans with eggplant, avacodo and spagetti noodles and some sauce. They like to drink warm water, the children. But I like cold so they keep some in the refrigerator. They boil thier water and then run it through a filter. I am trying to drink lots of water and stay away from the soda pop. Jemrose and the children put a water bottle in the freezer each night for me, so I can take the water with me when I go with Jodi. Jemrose drinks lots of tea and I love that. When I make a hot cup and don't have time to drink it I put it in the refrigerator and have it later as ice tea. It sure quenches my thirst.
We all sat in the frontroom and prayed before we went to bed. All the doors were locked and its very quiet out. Its dark and I look forward to shutting my eyes.
Now onto the Intro:
This adventure started about 4 years ago at Pikes Place Market. We met Kathleen Harrison, she spoke with us about how to make cheese and then went onto tell us about Kenya and her Project.
She is helping women with AIDS. We got to talking and she told us she had a goat program, where her organization would buy the milk goats and the mom's would milk the goats instead of breast feeding their babies. She also teaches the women to do crafts and then she helps them market their wares. She is an amazing women to do this on her own with no pay and alot of hard work. We thought it would be great to teach the women how to make cheese with their extra goat milk. We just needed to figure out the logistic of doing that. We had to plan around my birthing of babies, milking schedual and of course cheese making and our farmers markets. So we kind of thought winter here like Dec. Jan or Feb. Well the year came and went. The next year I got my passport all in line and thought I might go then, but that wasn't the case. Instead I met another lady working in Africa, Jodi Garbe.

She makes goat soap and other items like deodorant and lip balm and hand lotion. All great products. Mark had an interest in learning to make cheese so they came over in the Summer and put their hand to task. Its was alot of fun and they learned to process very quickly. So about 2 weeks before I left they came over faithfully and made cheese and I gave them more free run of the processing plant each time. The day I flew out Mark made his first batch of cheese by himself and I was in Seattle and he Now we jump up to just before the trip... Shots. Then I was told by someone that I didn't need to take clothes over - because clothes were cheap there and I could just buy them there. A few days before I was to leave I talked to Jodi and she said no way thats is not good info. So I had to repack my suitcase to take clothes for me. I had several people give me gifts to take over there and give away. Bob Gurassio made me 20 wooden cars, he lives in Clatskanie Oregon. Dick and Bev Nieces sent me 20 color books, and crayons to take, from Eastern Oregon. My mom sent me stuffed animals and some matchbox cars to take over. I had a teacher for Olympia bring me soccor balls and socks to give away over there. So I took 3 suitcases filled with goodies and my clothes.

On January 17 it started snowing. Not the usual kind where it snows 2 inches then melts and freezes and then melts some more. Oh no someone told the Weather Man I wanted to fly out to sunny weather, his response was Not on My watch. We are in full kidding now, which means that we have heat lamps all over the barn in every pen... its cold out. We had about 44 does kid before I left for Rwanda. We sold all the kids we needed to before I left so that the girls didn't have any extra work to do while I am gone. Mark came over today to packaged some restaurant cheese orders and made some chevre. When we got up we had 10 inches of snow on the deck. Which usually isn't a big deal except Mark needs to come do this stuff so he feels comfortable about doing it on his own. It doesn't look like anyone is going anywhere today. I am hoping on Thur. the rain starts so by Friday I can run to town for the few last items I need - like bug spray, suntan lotion, garden shears for trimming goat hooves, socks, and maybe a pair of tennis shoes. Today I took my second malaria pill and Friday the 13th I had my yellow fever shot and Mengacal (spelling may be wrong) shot to the tune of $216, the malaria tablets were $96... talk about sticker shock!!! Tomorrow they are saying we will get more snow... ICK!

We had to move the cow to a pen because a limb fell over her pasture fence and the snow was shocking her. 911 got called twice today. Once was a butt call. The sheriff came out to see if were were alright. The second one was because Ali drank bleach by mistake... she is fine. We had freezing rain today too, tree limbs snapped everywhere. We had a couple of trees break off and some big limbs fall to the ground to. It never got more than 33 degrees today. Cant wait to see what tomorrow brings. Had about 1/2 inch of Ice cover everything.

I got up at 5am- cleaned the kitchen a little and David had already loaded my 4 suitcases. We stopped at Walmart to get batteries for my Ipod and camera. I also got some pepto tabs and calamine lotion. WE also had to get locks just for the suitcases that were airport approved. Then off to Pikes Place. We sold cheese all day. We did very good so I took an extra $100 dollars with me. David took me to Jodi's mom's house where she was packing her stuff to go. David left me with Jodi cause he had to be back in Seattle the next day to sell cheese and needed to get home. I took my motion sickness pills 2 hours before we were to take off. We repacked my suitcase to get everything she had extra to take. I put the locks on all my suitcases and then put the four keys in different places. Jodi's mom made us sandwiches to take. Jodi's brother took us to the airport. The plane leaves at 11:45 for Washington DC. I will be taking motion sickness pills every 4 hours till we get to Rwanda.

When we boarded this plane they gave us slippers and each seat had a monitor that we could watch our choice of movies, listen to music, watch the flight information, play games. I chose Romancing the Stone for my movie. They also brought us pillows, and blankets and eye covers along with toothpaste and toothbrush. This is a huge plane. There were hardly any passengers and so Jodi and I got 3 seats to ourselves, so we could stretch out and sleep. We will be traveling 6314 miles to Addis Abeba and we will be traveling at 601 mph at an altitude of 6000 ft. Thought you might like a little extra info.

Jodi taking a nap. This is one long flight. Looking out the window is only clouds. We are over the ocean. I took another motion sickness pill. They served us lunch: chicken with red sauce - rice and peas. Cheese and crackers, cheesecake, green salad with Italian dressing. Hot Tea and water. It was very good. This is so hard to do nothing on such a long flight... when I have so much to do.

We are now 5274 miles from Addis. We are flying past Athens Greece now. We went across the Mediterranean Sea. We have been on the plane for 9 hours. Every once in awhile the plane shakes. I am now watching another movie, The Sound of Music. We have about 1 hour till we are there. They serve us breakfast: cheese omelet, tomato and hash browns, roll, crescent, jelly, coffee, water. And I am stuffed.

I cant tell you if its night time or morning. I think its just before sunrise. I can see the red sky on the horizon. We have landed...January 23. We went out the back door of the plane and walked down the stairs and boarded a bus. It took us to the main terminal and we then boarded a smaller bus and went to a smaller terminal. We went into the lounge and waited for our flight to leave.

I will be sitting beside the window for this last part of the flight. I took some pictures but they didn't turn out very good so I wont bore you with them. We landed in Kigali where we again walked down the stairs and walked to the terminal. We had to fill out passport paperwork again and I got my passport stamped. The weather is warm and very nice here.
Jodi had some friends meet us to take me where I will be staying.
I stayed with Jemrose Walker and her 9 children. She is a foster mom helping these children through their school years. Right now there were only two boys and 3 girls home. . Jodi stayed for awhile. I went and layed down and took a nap, but when I got up I had a headache so I layed back down for a while. Think its jet lag. I unpacked my suitcases and organized my stuff. Staying here will be wonderful. They don't have hot water so they heat up the water and put it in a large thermos for me to wash my face and sponge bath. The first thing I learned was their way of greeting you... its always giving you a hug and then a hand shake. They call me Auntie, which they call all the women that come into their house to stay. She cooked dinner for me, Pea's with celery, potatoes, rice and bread and I had water, they had pop. After dinner the kids washed and put away the dishes. We prayed in the evening before we went to bed. It was very nice
I have to say I miss my family... I am so far away. But the adventure is about to unfold.
I went to bed and slept very sound....

More tomorrow......
Well -- have you noticed that it snowed out? I took notice a few days ago and was surprised that white wet stuff covered the ground and made everything wet and cold. Though my daughters put on pretty dresses and took thier shoes off and took pictures in this stuff. I am not sure if it was to see how long they could go before they got frost bite. The photo's turned out great!
This snow thing causes so much work for us farmers. We end up having to haul alot of water buckets to the goats and cow. You have to use the tractor to move hay around. And then there is the temperature.... cold.
We seem to just go with the flow and keep moving on.
My trip to Africa is almost here... I am going to the Pikes Place Market with David Sat. morning. I will work the market with him and then we will meet up with Jodi and head to the airport. It will be a long day for sure. My flight leaves at 11:45pm and we wont be in Kigali until the 23 of January.
We have a lay over in Ethiopia and then onto Rwanda.
Well the snow this morning was so .... I don't know. I was hoping the weather man was wrong as usual. But to no avail we ended up with 25 inches of snow. David had to get the tractor out before we could even go to the barn. The power was off since 3:30am and when Ali woke me up at 5:00 am to see the snow I was shocked. But the reason she woke me was even funnier... She had Jonny inside last night (one of our cats), well he wanted outside and she opened her bedroom window and put him on the window sill and sent him on his way only to have him disappear into the snow. She jumped out the window to save her cat and thats when she found out how much snow we had. The cat spent the rest of the morning inside. Well once I was a wake and saw the snow I couldnt go back to sleep. So out onto the couch I went and watched the snow fall. I woke the girls up at 8am and we still didn't have any power. So David moved the BBQ closer to the back door and we heated the baby goats milk and the girls took it out and fed some cold babies - thier heat lamps were off. We started melting some snow so we could start milking the goats by hand. Just as we were heading to the barn the power came on... Ya! I cleaned the parlor and milked the goats. I was done at about 10:30am. Our adopted grandparents had gone and got pizza the day before so they could come up and have pizza with us before I leave for Africa. David cleaned the driveway up by going up and down it about 3 times so they could get thier truck up the driveway. They came about 11:45 for pizza. It sure did taste good too. David went out and made trailes around the farm so we could get to the places we needed to. It sure looks funny too. He also had to scrape the snow off the chicken house so the roof wouldn't break.
Now the funny goats are the nigerians... the snow is deeper than thier backs. Ali made a trail for them to be able to get to the hay feeder and I wish I had the picture she took of them on her phone. So funny. Knight our llama had about 18 inches of snow on his back. He seemed alright today though.
I layed down about 2pm and took a nap. Got up at 3 and packaged cheese for David to take to Olympia tomorrow. He printed out the invoices. I think everyone knows what thier jobs are while I am gone. Mark and Teneka (I may not of spelled her name right) are making the chevre for me and packaging the cheese and labeling for David. Mark made the last batch of Chevre by himself with me in the background. I had to hang it cause it snowed and no one could get up our driveway yesterday. Today we all were snowed in .... hopefully tomorrow afternoon he can come up and take the cheese down and package some cheese for David for Sat.'s market. I feel confident that Mark and Teneka can handle the task.
I will Skype David while in Africa... and possibly email when in town. I won't be adding anything to the blog until I get home ..... so no one panic after Friday evening....I will blog each day with pictures when I am back... this will take 3 weeks... so patience will be in order. Especially for me if something cool happens.
Well thats my up date for today. Stay warm and dry and enjoy the beauty of the season.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-75349415838193571112012-01-09T20:17:00.000-08:002012-01-09T20:17:42.130-08:00Another Intern bites the dust! Our newest intern wanted to make cheese right off the bat, like I am going to turn over my machine to just anyone....NOT! He left mad cause after observing him for about 1 week we thought better than to turn him loose with my business. He was nice - just thought he knew more and could do more than I was ready to let him. Anyway the stress level here at the farm has dropped alot.
This summer I had a couple who makes soap come and spend many days at the farm and helped me make cheese and package and lable too. They are who we chose to make cheese while I am gone to Africa. He bought two kids from me and is going off to Calf. to start a dairy... Only problem is he doesn't want to clean and do the grunt work that is all part of the farm thing.... Goood Luck Timmy.
Well I took 21 kids off to the auction in Chehalis to be sold.... Got the reciept in the mail today and I owe the auction $37. I paid someone to buy all those kids. Man oh man I am mad. I will not ever again take any kids there again... And I will telll everyone about the rip off place.
I also thought it would be a no big deal to go get my last two shots.... not so.... and its going to cost me $350 to have two shots... I am so disappointed. So after I pay for my shots I have about $100 to spend in Africa instead of $500. Please pray God will send me some more money to take.
We just had two goats kid in the last few days. We have a few more goats to have babies and then we are done.
Taneka and Mark made the batch of cheese that is hanging now. We will hopefully take it down tomorrow or Wed. We are going to package abunch of resturant orders tomorrow. We also are having a tour, a guy come buy 2 kids, and my accountant is coming too.
It will be crazy tomorrow.
Today though was sit back and relax.... I think after all the drama of Tim we were all exhausted with trying to understand a person thats not easy to understand.
Anyway have a great day.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-33429554751237518462012-01-06T12:24:00.000-08:002012-01-06T12:24:49.702-08:00Bucks off to the AuctionWe got up to frozen ground this morning... no fog. The girls and I had to do all the chores cause Tim and David headed to Seattle to deliver cheese and sell at Pikes Place.
We only have one mom with twin bucks still in a pen. So feeding extra goats is pretty easy. We have turned the boar mom and her twin bucks loose in the top so they can go out and run and eat grass. We are milking about 35 does now. I was sure glad to be done milking this morning. Bottle feeding was long and the only thing that kept us going was that tonight we will be 21 kids less. After milking I ran the babies to the auction. I am making cheese tomorrow after milking. Ya! It should be a good batch since I am not using 8 gallons a day to feed the kids. We are going to start the older kids on the Lambar bucket with 10 nipples on it. That cuts feeding them down to about 10 min for 10 kids. So much faster. I still have about 10 does to sell But I have a guy coming tonight to buy two and then tomorrow another person is buying 2 and then Sunday I have a 12 year old that has saved her money up for two does. That leaves me a few left and I have another lady coming to buy some for her sons birthday gift.
So that should just about do it. We have about 10 does left to kid.... but that could be a month off.
I am going to dump milk into the bulk tank tonight after milking cause I don't have to save any for kids.
Two friends who have helped before make cheese are coming over to make cheese with me. They will be making cheese while I am gone. That should keep my husband happy and supplied with cheese.
Last night a friend and her two boys and husband came and helped feed the baby goats. We took pictures of him in the pen with the baby goats while they were attacking him. He loved it. It was so cute. He kept sneaking out of the house to go hang with the big kids so he could feed the goats. What a trooper.
I stayed up from 8:00pm to 10:30 pm packaging cheese and labeling it for David to do market today. I didn't know he was going to stay and do market... Hope he does well. We are behind on some bills and need to make money.
I have saved almost all the money from the sales of kids for my Africa trip... I hid it! I did have to pay a bill of 150 yesterday though with it.. God will supply what I need.
Well I am going out to clean the pasturizer so tomorrow I am ready to make cheese. The cheese cloth was washed yesterday and is ready, the 10 buckets are washed and ready... Now to make it. I have to order bags tomorrow and pray they get here soon. I have a big order for Friday. So the wows of a farmer.....$$$$.
Have a Great DayBlue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-82098749603059936312012-01-05T11:28:00.000-08:002012-01-05T11:28:18.191-08:00What a Lovely DayI have to say it is a good feeling to work with your hands, to be outside and smelling fresh air. My job lets me have all these benifits. I think farmers stay healthier than city folks, because of our lifestyle. We don't need entertained - we are to tired. We don't need fancy food - cause usually when foods on the table we just eat it. And we don't need fancy cars - goats, hay and grain mess it up. Cothes are usually two kinds - farm and town, neither is to fancy cause we don't have the energy or time to care.
But in all farm life is good.
As I am out milking this morning I am thinking about the last 10 years that we have been here at Blue Rose Dairy. The changes we have gone through, the different situations we have had to over come. the number of goats we have had and then not. How our children have grown up and flew the coop. And where are we going next?
The things that stick out the most with me is the smell of the morning air, early morning. The thousands of beautiful sunrises and sets we have seen - because we are always outside during them. The weather changes we have endured. Rain, Rain, Snow, Sleat, Frozen rain, frozen ground. Its always changing. I think God does this to keep us on our toes.... and making us ready to change in a moment if need be. From getting up and putting on warm gear, ear muffs and gloves and stripping everything off before the morning chores are done.
We have met some great people at the markets we have sold our cheese at. And we have met some real stinkers. We have had opportunites open up for our farm and other ones close. My husband is a real salesmen and loves the challenge of a good chef. He loves to visit and share our story with eveyone. Sometimes I think alittle to much - but that is David.
This farm has been a blessing to more people than we can count. We have opened our doors to everyone and anyone. We have always said if you want a place to stay your welcome --- but you will have to work on the farm. God has taken care of us through thick and thin and He still is.
We are almost done with kidding season already and the cheesemaking part starts again. The weather is clean and clear and we look forward to meeting more people and sharing our love of goats and cheese with anyone who will listen.
I hope you have a wonderful day.... The Sun is shinning and the sky is blue and my farm is smiling.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-54940662425138426422012-01-03T11:17:00.000-08:002012-01-03T11:17:26.653-08:00Busy Busy at Blue Rose DairyYesterday we went out to the barn to triplest - all boys, and a set of twins. We had two more does kid during the day. We are milking 26 does and have picked out only 6 does kids for milk replacers. We have a huge amount of buck kids that are going to the auction on Friday. I need to make cheese and they are between me and pastuizer.
Tim is back from his weekend in Seattle spending time with friends. He has been doing the watering and is helping feed kids - 40 of them - bottles. He finds things to do around the farm when we all go our own directions. Hope he is learning what he will need to take care of his 3 kids he is buying.
Danyel and Ali will be gone all day today- until chores at 4:30. I have to make a big dinner tonight cause I think we will be having extra kids today.
I want to go and get the processing plant set up and cleaned. I need to package some feta for my mom in Arizona. She has been selling it down there. I have to package cheese for resturants on Friday of this week.
I am hoping to be able to make a batch of cheese on Sat. We should have alot less kids to feed so I should be able to save a bunch of cheese. I got about 7 gallons today and so I put 5 in the cooler and will add to that each day. Hoping for a 30 gallon batch but we will see.
Its windy out today and they said we were suppose to get some more rain.
Well I am thinking about Africa, since I have only a few weeks to go. I just hope the farm holds up while I am gone. Taneka and Mark are coming over to make cheese for me. That will help alot. They have helped me in the past. So they are very familier with my processing plant. Maybe Tim can watch and learn but they will be the cheese makers while I am gone.
Well I will add more later.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-78566590436093329112011-12-31T13:44:00.000-08:002011-12-31T13:44:26.575-08:00More kids...Date Changes for Africa.....I just went out to the barn and another doe had a kid. Now all our pens are full again....
We are starting chores at 4:30 - bottle feeding first cause we have so many kids to feed tonight.
The girls are going to a dance for the new year and I am taking the girls to Longview then takeing the grandkids up to Clatskanie... think I will just stay up at my daughters till the girls are ready to come home cause it will be quieter and that way I can save money on gas.
My chevre is about ready to come down but we cant deliver it till Tue as the restuants are not open.
It is cold out and the wind is a little nippy.
The does milked pretty good this morning. This evening we should get a good milking too.
Have a Happy New Year.
We are milking 17 does, have 32 does that have kidded.
My flight for Africa isn't leaving till the 21 now as one of the flights was cancelled. I will be back in Washington Feb. 15.....Cant wait to see the World!Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-27376747248209513382011-12-30T10:25:00.000-08:002011-12-30T10:25:25.443-08:00More Babies _ Does Milking nowWe went out to the barn this morning to find 3 more babies born. I cleaned the milk parlor for the third time this year. Its a good feeling to be out in the milk parlor again. The day has a purpose and we are back on a schedual. We milked 10 does this morning... we got more milk than we needed for feeding kids this morning. We had 14 kids to bottle feed. All but 5 ate. Two of the kids are ones we are keeping and Danyel warned them this morning if they didn't eat this evening mom was going to tube them. Hopefully that scares them enough they eat thier bottles.
My two grandchildren are here for a few days. Kiara and Nick, I think they enjoy themselves.
Today I will go check on the Chevre in the processing plant....David is holding his breath so he can go deliver his cheese to the restuarnts. We haven't been able to go to Pikes Place because we have no chevre to sell. Maybe this next week.
Well Ethiopia cancelled one of our flights. So we are leaving on the 20th instead of the 18th and I will stay a little longer - not sure on the return date. I also found out the airport in Ethiopia is small -- that makes me feel so much better.
More up dates later.
Have a Great Day
Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-67050222395889472412011-12-28T21:40:00.000-08:002011-12-28T21:40:08.818-08:00x tra post on kidsWe had 6 does kid today, triplets, twins, and single, In all 11 kids. We have mom's doubled up in pens. its pretty crazy in our barn right now. Ali had to make a graphic chart for me to lable so we knew where everyone was and who had what for kids. Our totals are 35 kids - 19 bucks and 16 does. We have picked out 4 does and 1 buck for replacer animals so far. I need to pick 20 replacer does for our milk line in 2 years. So I have a ways to go before I have all my girls picked out. In the mean time we have people coming and buying our kids. Trying to get 20 kids does for a lady in Spokane too. Well will have more to post tomorrow.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-78664586661422744262011-12-28T14:10:00.000-08:002011-12-28T14:10:16.314-08:00The Stork at our Farm is very busyWe went out to the barn to find two does had babies. Then three more have kidded and its only 2pm. Tomorrow we are pulling kids off of 8 does and will start milking them. We are running out of pens...now we are out of pens. No problems kidding which is great. Although I have to say that my goats look very healthy.
I made Chevre last night and hung it this morning. Its a slow daining chevre - which isn't going to make my husband very happy cause he has orders on Thur and Fri to Resturants. They will just have to wait.
David is stressing out cause we are broke financially and the money isn't coming in fast enough. I know God will handle it and so I keep working as if everything is great. I have faith in the unseen and the promise of my Daddy.
Anyway things are hopping around here. Ali has got a pell grant for her college in Vancouver Wa. She wants to be a airline steward. So she may be moving in a month or so... after I get back from Africa.
I have been to busy to even think about Africa.
A couple came and bought two kids this morning. So my Africa fund is now $100. Thats a start.
Well I think I will go eat some lunch. As I am home alone.
David took Ali Driving. Danyel is heading to town and Tim just told me he is heading to town too.
All the sounds I hear are coming from the washing machine and the dish washer.
I will check on the goats in a few hours, it didn't look like anyone else was going to kid today...... but you never know.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-34019923834789176012011-12-27T11:37:00.000-08:002011-12-27T11:37:14.658-08:00Triplets this morningOne of our toggenburg moms had triplets today. Our new intern got to watch two being born. We had two bucks and a doe. Dark Chocolate color on all three. Its cold out today and we are expecting to have at least one more doe kid today.
We are staying close to home today and in the house as much as possible. I am making a batch of cheese from milk we got from Lucky Hook Farm in Moses Lake, WA. We got about 45 gallons or so. I am on the cooling down side of pasturizing. Hoping this cheese hangs great and I can have cheese for Friday deliveries. We will see how it goes.
I have also gotton sick from The Children coming over on Christmas Eve. My ears ache and my throat is sore and my nose is running down my throat. Ick! I want to sleep. I'v taken 10 garlic pills and I am drinking cool water.
Well I will let you go get something accomplished today. Have a great day.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-27499152381564888862011-12-25T20:46:00.000-08:002011-12-25T20:57:28.350-08:00Babies, Babies and MoreWe had twins tonight. The sannen doe, Sheila, sprained her leg somehow during kidding. She was fine when we checked on her, then we go up after dinner to find she is lame on her front leg and is cleaning up white twin kids. We used a towel around her chest and helped her into a pen with a heat lamp for the kids. We will check on her through the night to see that she doesn't fall on the kids.
We sold our first set of kids today. They were a Christmas gift from a husband to his wife. They were so in love with the kids. They also had two children and they thought they were pretty neat too.
We were going to go to the Casino for dinner tonight but Shiela had other plans for us.
So I warmed up some ham, baked potatoe and some sweet carrots, homemade rolls and served a green salad. It filled us up and now we can just relax for the rest of the evening, other than going up and checking on Shiela.
We have had 15 kids so far. Only got about 50 more does to go.
We won't start milking them until we have 8 does with babies and then we have to wait 3 days after the 8th doe has her babies before we start the whole milking process again. So we have 7 does right now.
One of the best things ever is right now we have no TV cause I didn't pay the Direct TV Bill. I had to make choices and decided to catch up with the bill in a few more weeks. But its so quiet here and everyone finds differnt things to do.... like read, play sudko, draw and play the wii game. We have watch movies we have had for years and have never seen them. Its a wonderful day for MOM!
I am thinking more about Africa.... packing and getting things ready. I will go get my perscription filled tomorrow for the Malaria and I also have to order a phone for $80 to use over there.
I am borrowing my daughters carry on bag on wheels for all my clothes and such and then the other two big suitcases are filling up with stuff to give away. My mom is even getting into the show by sending some matchbox cars she bought. I am still in shock that I am actually going. This is just crazy. Can't wait to see what God had in store for me.
Our new Intern Tim will be here tomorrow. We are buying 50 gallons of milk from Lucky Hook farm in Moses Lake. Tim will be picking it up on his way to Winlock Washington. I need to make chevre for the restuants by Friday. Hope the ph is right so it all hangs great. Tim is going to get to help me make the first batch of cheese. I am hoping I can teach him how to make the cheese while I am in Africa and package it up for David. That will take a huge load off my mind while I am gone.
I will go out tomorrow and get things ready for the milk and cheese making in the processing plant.
Well I am going to let you go. Have a very Blessed Evening and remember to stop and Smell the Roses.
Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-24467579661380879862011-12-24T07:09:00.000-08:002011-12-24T07:09:54.598-08:00Kidding Season is Here and Africa Here I ComeMerry Christmas, Christ is the Reason for the Season. Our Family and Farm want to wish you all a Blessed Christmas
Yes, I am going to Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya! I have the ticket in hand. Now all the real packing will start.. I can take two 50# suitcases and my carry on bag. The two big suitcases will be full of stuff to give away. All my stuff will be in the carry on bag. Travel light- coming home the bags will be full of stuff for family and friends and some dresses I bought for me.
Jode is who will be traveling with me to Rwanda. I am so glad too, cause I am terrified about the airports. Missing a plane or getting lost has always been my big fear. Coming home I will travel alone and that is when I will need all your prayers.
Wow, a women from Winlock, Wash is really going to Africa to help the people. Now the strange thing is no church is sponsering me, no grange, or any big business.
This group is paying most of the airfare. Blue Rose Dairy is picking up the tab for Visa's and extra's while there.
Please check out these websites and help them if you can. They dont get big grants from big corporations. They do get them from small companies. There is no staffing or overhead so all the money goes to the people to help the people. These two ladies have a big heart and truely are gifted.
Anyway I will keep a jounal while I am there and then post them daily when I get back. I will also post pictures.

As for kidding Season.... yes it is here. We started two days ago. We have 4 moms and 8 kids on the ground and everyone is doing fine. One doe had triplets so we are bottle feeding suppliment (colostrum to them). We milk another doe and feed the colostrum to the triplets . We have heat lamps on each pen right now. David has 9 heat lamp set ups ready for the kids. My oldest doe Mary (13 years old) had one buck kid. We will keep him for a replacer buck. One lamanch doe had twin does, we will keep one or both of them. I have to save 20 doe kids this year for replacer does in 2 years. Then we have lots of people wanting kids this year so these little guys should go fast. I have one lady coming on Christmas Day to pick up a pair of does. We havent had any problems birthing. One of our large Sannen does had two large bucks. They are strong and big.
Chores in the morning take about 1/2 hour longer just to go pet the kids. We are looking at close to 60 does kidding this season. We are just hoping they are all done by the time I leave for Africa.

So preperation for Christmas Eve is on.... made fudge, peanut brittle, walnut roca last night I was up till 12 midnight. Danyel and Katie made the cookie dough and Danyel finished baking the cookies yesterday. Today I will make potatoe soup, double batch of home made rolls, a large green salad and dressing. Our adopted grandparnets brought us a big plate of assorted cookies she made - this will add a nice touch to our table too. Everyone will be showing up about 5pm. Since Christmas is going to be pretty lean - we are playing a christmas gift exchange game for the adults and then the kids will open gifts from all of us. Ali and I will be cleaning house and doing the prep work for the gathering here tonight. I will have Christmas music blarring all day. Its warm outside right now and its not raining. Only two adult children will be coming - Our oldest is having horse problems in Montana and so they won't be coming. But #2 and #3, #8 #9 will be here. Well better get Ali up so we can start chores - so we can clean and bake in the house.

Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-27740639215001728252011-12-18T20:26:00.000-08:002011-12-18T20:26:28.821-08:00Kidding season has begunWe have two does in labor. Danyel checked on them at 8pm and nothing yet. We will check again about 10pm.
I went to Olympia today and David and Ali went to Seattle, Pikes Place Market. This weekend was pretty good - which is really needed since we are behind on our truck payment, liability insurance. We are not doing Christmas as I will take the extra $ and buy gifts in Africa.... which is still up in the air... again. I no longer get excited until I am holding the tickets in my hand. So what will be will be. If the tickets don't come through before Christmas we will give out gift certificates or cash to everyone to go get something they want after Christmas. I hope I can go since I don't look forward to such a non present day.
I guess the its family getting together that counts not the gifts. Anyway its sad to think we wont be doing very much for the family.
Oh well, cry as I will - God knows best.
I am going to go buy some supplies to make candy and cookies tomorrow. We are having potatoe soup and rolls for Christmas Eve dinner.
Well have a good evening and I will keep you posted on kidding.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-2094362625616140512011-12-13T11:29:00.000-08:002011-12-13T11:29:30.290-08:00The Cold is here! The weather is very cold... I know because I have a pile of ice next to the water buckets from breaking the ice and scooping it onto the ground. (Actually the girls do this). I grained the does this morning and checked to see how close we are to kidding.. maybe a week to go. I sure hope so cause I am almost out of cheese and cheese makes money and pays the bills.
I will package cheese tomorrow morning and then run to Longview (45 miles) and pick up my 2 year old granddaughter. She will be here for 3 days. I may have to run our adopted grandma to the Dr. on Thur. - Tacoma. The girls will watch Samantha for the day. Have two cheese deliveries to restuants in Olympia on Thur, David will deliver them. Then Market on Friday at Pikes Place.
Daniel, our visitor, got a job at the Pikes Place Market so he will be moving to Seattle. We have our first foster daughter living here right now too. So our house is full again.
Christmas is just going by the wayside I think. Africa is taking presidence and so I have no extra energy. I will make the Christmas Eve Soup and Rolls and the the sugar cookies to frost. But gifts will be small if I get to it.
We will be waiting to see about the tickets to Africa till the last minute.
Well enjoy the cool weather and stay warm but most of all remember that family is the best gift we can give each other.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-8639946009192860422011-12-12T11:37:00.000-08:002011-12-13T11:30:02.884-08:00Babies SoonIt was frozen out this morning. The water buckets were frozen and so the hammer and warm water are in action. Things are moving slow around here, but they are moving. We have 9 pens ready with heat lamps for kids and we have been spreading the word that babies are for sale for $25 dollars for 3 day old kids.
Farmers Markets are almost done for 2011 and that means drying up of money... oh well.
My trip to Africa is again at an iffy stage.... the one group only gave me $1300 and my round trip ticket is almost $1800. So if God wants me to go he will have the rest of the money here for the ticket. Waiting for the money transfere to be able to actually purchase the ticket. So maybe God has another plan that I don't know about. I am not worried cause if I am suppose to go I will go.
Though this could put a crimp in our Christmas Plans as we have told everyone that I would bring them something home for Christmas gifts from Africa.... But I guess if I don't go David and I are going shopping on the night before Christmas....ICK!
All our goats are looking really healthy and that makes me excited. last year a month before they were due about 20 goats aborted and then died with in the week of kidding. It was awful. So far so good this year.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-59310279046133659342011-12-09T10:52:00.001-08:002011-12-09T11:06:03.577-08:00Rwanda here comes Rhonda?Well I thought all was good to go for the trip to Africa, but alas no. The one organization only sent $1300 for my airline ticket and the ticket is $1790. There is no way we can come up with the extra money.... so we will watch and see what will God do. December isn't a good time on the farm... money is always tight and there is little if any income. When the babies are born that usually gives us alittle to help get by till April when markets start again. David just called me and said non of our big restaurants ordered cheese for next week... they have no Christmas parties coming up. So all we have are a few markets to do and that is that. We thought since our money was pretty tight this year I would take some of the money from the sale of the kids to Africa and buy everyone gifts there... it would help the income of the people in Africa and our budget too. So if I don't go we have to figure out how we will do Christmas. Isn't this the way it always goes? I am faithful God will do something great so that I can brag on Him about the trip.
We went to Longview 45 miles away to walk through the Journey of Bethlehem - it was great. We were cold but the church did a great job. Got home and I packaged the one order for David and he packed up the car for market.
Today we grained all the goats, and grandma and grandpa brought donuts for breakfast at 9am. Now I have to go out and package cheese for the farmers market this weekend. Sales for Nov. and Dec. are down quite a bit and so the aniticapated money we thought we would make and have is pretty nill.
On top our car insurance is almost $500 a month.... because they go off your credit score. OUCH! Being a farmer you feast or famine.... everyone who is a farmer knows that and you would think the insurance people would too. Oh well such is life.
We have four adult children living here right now. Daniel lives in Seattle but wanted to watch kids being born and help around the farm. Which he has done a great job helping David. Then we have one of our first foster daughters staying here for awhile, she is finishing highschool and helping with the farm work too. Then there is Danyel and Ali here too. Talk about a shocker feeding three people to 6 people. Good thing we got that beef in the freezer and some goat too.
Well thats enough about that stuff.
Goats are looking ripe for kidding soon. Some are much closer than others. Hopefully in the next few weeks we have kids on the ground and maybe I can make some cheese before I head to Africa.
Have a great weekend....Jesus is the Reason for the Season
Merry ChristmasBlue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473343415828638577.post-76786994889149267782011-12-03T20:08:00.001-08:002011-12-03T20:12:01.222-08:00Rwanda I am almost there!Well I got my hepitis shot and have a doctors appt on Tue to get my malaria tablets. My passport is ready and the tickets are almost bought. How exciting! I have colored calenders to take to teach the ladies to make beads and then the soccor balls and shorts and socks for the kids. I will try and get childrens clothes gathered and shoes to take too. My two suitcases will be full of things to give away. And we decided I would buy Christmas gifts in Africa for everyone. Now I am really excited.
Our goats are looking pretty ready to have babies in about 10 days or so. Hopefully all the kids will be delivered before I leave on the 18th of January. I am so excited What an opportunity of a lifetime. Did I mention I am excited? David went to Tacoma Farmers Market on Proctor today and froze. I went to Olympia and froze. We both did fairly well at market. I had to package some more marinated feta and some more Grande' Rosa too. Well I am ready for a warm bath and then a good book.Blue Rose Dairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00804153204595154381noreply@blogger.com0
